In September 2009 The Independent on Sunday signed him up to produce his first broadsheet article and in August 2011 he became Sport Magazine’s first and only Rugby Union columnist. David currently writes for the London Evening Standard during key rugby tournaments.

Since announcing his retirement from professional rugby in June 2012 due to a career-ending injury, Flats has established himself as a firm favourite in the corporate hospitality circuit, hosting and compering events with clients including Quilter, QBE, HSBC, Robert Walters, Accenture, Premiership Rugby and World Rugby.

His presence within the media industry has also increased; often seen on BT Sport as a studio guest or co-commentator for their Premiership Rugby coverage as well as co-presenting Channel 5’s Aviva Premiership Rugby highlights show every Sunday at 8pm with Mark Durden-Smith.

In 2015 Flats was named in ITV’s Rugby World Cup team to co-commentate on their live matches while he has also been an integral part of their Six Nations and Women’s Rugby World Cup coverage.

Flats is one half of the successful ‘Flats & Shanks’ rugby podcast which has been running since September 2016. Such is its success that in 2018 the duo were announced as presenters of ITV’s first Six Nations podcast which debuted at number 1 in the iTunes Podcast chart the first week of its release.
